50 Cent

Curtis James Jackson III, known as 50 Cent, was born in 1975 in the South Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, NYC. Due to the crack epidemic in the ’80s, he began to sell drugs at the brittle age of 12. In 1994 Curtis was arrested for selling cocaine to an undercover police officer.

Jackson made his breakthrough when Eminem heard his single “Guess Who’s Back?” and invited him to L. A to meet Dr. Dre. He signed to Shady Records and soon released his first album Get Rich or Die Tryin’. The lead single “In da Club” broke all charts immediately. His second album, The Massacre, made him even more successful. The lead single “Candy Shop” is still his most famous song. 

Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys is an American RnB singer born in Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, New York. At the age of 12, she took music, dance, and theater classes. Her career began in 1994 when she signed to Columbia Records but soon left them because of disagreements. Alicia made her breakthrough in 2001 when she released her debut album Songs in a Minor. The lead single “Fallin'” made her world-famous. In the 2002 Grammy ceremony, Keys won five awards, including the one for Best RnB Song for “Fallin'”. Her other great hits are the collaboration with Jay Z – Empire State of Mind, “No One”, and “Girl On Fire”.

Shawn Corey Carter, known as Jay Z, was born in 1969 in Brooklyn, NYC. As a child, Shawn showed a sparking interest in music. He adopted the stage name Jay Z as a tribute to his mentor Jaz O. 

Jay-Z could not find a major label to sign up to, so he, along with Damon Dash and Kareem Burke, created the independent label Roc-A-Fella Records in 1995. In 1996 he released his debut album Reasonable Doubt, which made him world-famous. 

In April 2008, Jay Z married Beyonce. They are now one of the most influential couples in the world and the top-earning Hollywood couple. In 2018 they released their joint studio album Everything Is Love. The lead single “Apeshit” brought them 8 nominations and2 awards at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards ceremony. 

Cardi B

Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, or just Cardi B, is an American rapper and songwriter born in 1992 in Washington Heights, Manhattan. To escape poverty and domestic violence, she became a stripper in a club in Tribeca. However, Cardi says that this decision was positive for her life because it allowed her to escape from home and continue her education. 

Cardi became popular due to her social media accounts on Vine and Instagram. In 2015 she joined the reality TV series Love and Hip Hop: New York but left it in 2016 to pursue a musical career. Her first commercial single, Bodak Yellow, was released in 2017. It made Cardi B the first person of Dominican descent to be on top of The Hot 100 Chart.
